Occupational Therapist

JOB SUMMARY

Assesses and treats the impact of illness, injury, developmental or psychological impairments on a patient's ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including range-of-motion, grooming, hygiene, eating, dressing, toileting, driving, cooking, and working. Responsible for assisting patients to regain, develop, and learn skills to achieve optimal independence, reduce joint strain, prevent further joint damage, and conserve energy. Develops, implements, and monitors the plan of care. Performs and directs administration of all occupational therapy modalities and collaborates with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Verifies physician orders prior to evaluation.
  • Evaluates each patient before administering treatments, incorporating psychological and physical issues.
  • Completes evaluations, establishes goals, and develops a plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Administers and directs occupational therapy treatments and modalities to assist patients in reaching their maximum rehabilitation potential using ADL activities, splinting, ROM, endurance building, strengthening exercises, cognitive retraining, coordination, and dexterity training.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of indications and contraindications for treatments.
  • Contacts the physician if a prescribed treatment is not indicated.
  • Acquires appropriate equipment, checks equipment for safety, and communicates evaluation, treatment procedures, and equipment use to the patient and family.
  • Applies or supervises appropriate treatments or modalities such as therapeutic exercises, hot moist packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, paraffin, soft tissue mobilization, balance training, and functional mobility training.
  • Checks patient tolerance of modalities during treatment.
  • Maintains contact with the referring physician regarding patient progress.
  • Observes treatment effects and recommends changes to the physician if indicated.

DAYS-SHIFT: 8:00A - 6:00P

Required Qualifications

  • New Mexico State Licensure as an Occupational Therapist.
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Experience in an acute care setting.
  • Blocked scheduling is accommodated.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of Occupational Therapy experience is preferred.

Certifications

  • BLS from AHA
  • New Mexico State Licensure as an Occupational Therapist

Experience

  • Demonstrates accountability and skills in assessment/evaluation, decision-making, and time management.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and organizational skills.
